kickstarter farmer laboratory: CFLs at 30 seconds

www.permies.com http I'm trying my first ever kickstarter campaign. Here is the blurb I wrote for it: I suspect that CFLs perform poorly when used for 30 seconds or less. Which is how most light bulbs are used in a home that does not waste energy. I'm thinking of calling this video "Turn off the damn lights!" I bought a bunch of gear to add some validity to this, but the gear turned out to be crap. And the good stuff is more than I'm willing to spend. Folks suggested that I do the kickstarter thing cuz others wanna see the video happen and would be willing to put in a few bucks. Mythbusters did some similar stuff a few years ago, but there were a lot of things they left out. They did a bank of lights where the lights would be on for two minutes and then off for two minutes. After five weeks, all of the bulbs were dead except for the LED. I wanna do 30 seconds on and two minutes off and then find out which bulbs last how long. Did the CFLs die first? I also have some gear for measuring luminosity. That gear is working fine, but my stuff to show the first few seconds of power consumption is not nearly as good as what they used in mythbusters. I need better gear. Relevant threads at permies: www.permies.com music by Jimmy Pardo

sunchokes aka jerusalem artichokes

www.permies.com Sunchokes (Jerusalem Artichokes) can be harvested all winter. No canning. No drying. No root cellar. Once established they typically require zero care. They taste a little like water chestnuts. When cooked they taste like potatoes. When cooked a long time, they become sweet. Helen Atthowe http of Stevensville, Montana, likes to eat them raw or mix them with other root crops and do a roast with rosemary and tamari. Norris Thomlinson of Portland, Oregon, talks about how he ate about a pound a day all winter. He kept a pot of them cooking on the woodstove to help convert the inulin to sugar. Without this technique, you might fart a lot and call these "fartichokes". A small patch produced about a hundred pounds last year. He also talks about how his chickens would eat about a pound a day. Michael Pilarski shares that thick stalks are indicators of lots of tubers. He also says that sunchokes make for the fastest privacy hedges. Kelly Ware of Bigfork, Montana shows how she integrated a patch of sunchokes with her kids' sandbox. The sunchokes appear to really like the sand! Kelly points out that sunchokes are popular for the raw food diet. And she mentions how sunchokes make a good flour as a gluten free flour substitute. She mentions how it the dried canes make for a good bamboo substitute. Jen Davis of Portland, Oregon has a huge patch even though she doesn't like the flavor. She thinks they make a good survival food – just in case. Anne Trudeau shares a recipe …

cold smoker + composting toilet = weird combo

www.permies.com Karen biondo of La Biondo Farm and Kitchen shows us a shed that serves as both a cold smoker and a composting toilet. What a wacky combination! Karen smokes pork and salmon in the cold smoker. She uses alder in an old wood stove for the smoker. Then you step around the corner and there is a composting toilet. No smell She says the secret to keeping the smell away is the use of peat moss or wood shavings. Apparently it goes three or four months between needing to be emptied.
